Reflexology During Pregnancy

Reflexology is a wonderful treatment for pregnant women. It is the ideal opportunity for the woman to enjoy feeling pampered and relaxed.

Common complaints during pregnancy for which reflexology can be extremely beneficial are:

  • Anxiety

  • Back pain

  • Morning sickness

  • Headache and neck tension

  • High blood pressure

  • Insomnia

  • Oedema

  • Tiredness and lack of energy

Dr Gowri Motha, Reflexologist, Obstetrician and pioneer in water births in London introduced reflexology into her maternity unit in the mid-1980s where reflexology treatments were given in her ante-natal clinic.

It was found that not only did the mothers-to-be love receiving the reflexology, but several problems that they had been suffering with dramatically reduced. This inspired Dr Motha to carry out research on the benefits of reflexology During pregnancy. She focused on raised blood pressure and concluded that not only did the woman's blood pressure improve, but that the length of the labour was greatly reduced. These findings are recorded in the 'Forest Gate Project', a study carried out on the effects of reflexology on labour outcome.
